Bombs in a burkini?

When I read that some beaches in France had banned the wearing of burkinis and that women were ordered to take them off by police officers I thought it was a joke. But no, the burkini ban was not a joke. Nor was the police asking women to remove their modest clothing.

I wasn’t mad, or even frightened, about this new ban because of feminism. Of course women should wear what they want. But this issue goes to the heart of something much deeper and more sinister than even the controlling on female bodies. It is down right Hitler-esque.

When Hilter started to take control over Germany and remove Jews from society he didn’t do it overnight. He did it bit by bit. Taking away a little here and a little there, all in the name of saving mother Germany from ruin. Hitler knew that if you took away too much at once people would revolt, but if you take away some here and a little there people wouldn’t think it was so bad.

It’s the same with dehumanizing a group of people. Hitler couldn’t come right out and say “The Jews are subhuman beings and should be eliminated”, people would never fall for it. No, he had to be sly about it. “The Jews hold too much power in our society.” “The Jews are stingy.” “The Jews are taking jobs we should have.” These are the kind of things Hitler’s propaganda machine would spew until the German population was more or less willing to look the other way when thousands of people were killed.

This is how to kill a group of people; slowly so not many notice. And this is what terrified me about the ban.

Does the French government really believe bombs could be hidden in a wetsuit with a hood? What is their actual reason for banning a burkini? What will they try next?

Let this be a lesson; those who don’t know history are bound to repeat it. Hitler gained his power and took away rights little by little.

P.S. If you want to know more about how post WWI Germany becasue Hitler’s Germany an interesting read is Eric Larson’s In The Garden of Beasts. One of the best books I’ve ever read.

(The ban has been overturned. Hurrah!)
